There’s a lot of turmoil in the world right now. No matter what you do or where you live, you’ve likely been affected by the coronavirus pandemic in some way. Whether you’re struggling with reduced hours, job loss, or the fear of you or your loved ones contracting the virus, you’re probably experiencing some form of anxiety. While it may be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel during this worldwide crisis, it is crucial to stay positive and focus on your physical and mental health. Though it may sound strange, an Epsom salt foot soak may be just what you need to decrease fear and anxiety in your life and return to a place of peace.

Anxiety is a totally natural human emotion. Especially in times like these, most people are dealing with some sort of fear or anxiety. However, when it builds up over time, it can lead to physical issues such as tense muscles, sleeplessness, headaches, and even digestive issues.

If you struggle with panic attacks or an anxiety disorder, be sure to get in touch with a therapist. Most are offering remote appointments over zoom or skype, so you shouldn’t have to wait until things reopen to get the help that you need.

Benefits of Epsom salt foot soak

Delivers magnesium

Magnesium is a critical mineral in the body that is absolutely essential for strengthening your bones, muscles, and soft tissue. Plus, magnesium levels in the body are depleted when someone is experiencing stress or anxiety. This mineral is also related to the production of serotonin in the body, or “the happy hormone.” Therefore, when you don’t have adequate amounts of magnesium, you don’t experience the same level of serotonin. Unfortunately, nearly 50% of all Americans are thought to be deficient in this vital mineral, which could explain why anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental health issues in the country.

Other than taking a supplement or eating foods rich in magnesium such as almond, spinach, or dark chocolate, one of the best ways to boost the magnesium levels in your body is by taking a soak in an Epsom salt bath. Studies have shown that this mineral is absorbed through your skin and consequently will increase the magnesium in your body.

Will help you relax

Just the simple act of soaking your feet will help you slow down, relax, and focus on the moment. If you are so worked up that you have been unable to sleep or are experiencing other side effects, a foot soak could be just what you need. While you are soaking your feet, try meditating on all the good things happening in your life and let the warm water help you focus on unwinding your tense muscles from your feet all the way up to your head.

How to soak your feet in Epsom salt

While a full-body Epsom salt bath may deliver more potent benefits, our busy schedules don’t necessarily allow time for a daily bath or a leisurely soak. Thankfully, soaking your feet in a container with warm water, Epsom salt, and a little essential oil for 15 minutes each day will act in virtually the same way and help decrease your feelings of fear and anxiety.

All you need is a large container (both of your feet should be able to fit), ¼ cup of plain Epsom salt, warm water, and your favorite essential oil. I love lavender if you are soaking your feet before bed since it can help you relax and combat insomnia.

Add all of your ingredients to the container and soak your feet for around 20 minutes. This is the perfect amount of time to sit still with your thoughts or a cup of tea and a good book. Follow by gently rubbing your heels with a little baking soda, if desired, and rinsing off in the water. This can help exfoliate and remove dead skin and will leave your feet even softer. Once you have finished soaking your feet, cover them in a nourishing lotion, and put socks on to trap in the moisture.
